Epistemology, Practical Philosophy and Social Theory.

TONG Shijun has published more than 100 papers and more than 10 books, including The Problem of Modernity in the Dialogue between China and the West (Shanghai, 2010), Critique and Practice: Essays on Jürgen Haberma Dialectics of Modernization: Habermas and the Chinese Discourse of Modernization (Sydney of Australia, 2000), Epistemology and Methodology in the Post-Hegelian European Philosophy of 19th Century (Bergen of Norway, 1993) and Chinese Philosophy: Practical Reason and Dialectical Logic (Bergen, 1989). He is co-author of Introduction to Philosophy (with ZHANG Tianfei, et.al. Shanghai, 1997, 2008) and Western Philosophy at the Time of Marx and Engels (with ZHAO Xiuyi, Shanghai, 1994, 2008). He also published several academic brochures, such as Learning and Reasonableness: Philosophical Reflections in Daily Life (Beijing, 2010), Theoretical Dialogue in Practice (Malmoe of Sweden, 2009) and Cultural Soft Power (Chongqing, 2008). The works for which he worked as editor-in-chief include Western Learning in China: Reflections on the 90^th Anniversary of May Fourth Movement (Beijing, 2010), Spiritual Life in China Today (Beijing, 2009), Social Engineering of Scientific Development (10 Vols. Shanghai, 2007) and A New Treatise on Ideology (Shanghai, 2006), etc. s’s Critical Theory (Beijing, 2007),

Tong has published around 10 Chinese translations from English or German books, including Jürgen Habermas’s Faktizität und Geltung (Beijing, 2003, 2011), Gunnar Skirbekk’s Timely Thoughts (co-trans with YU Zhenhua, et. al., Shanghai, 2007), A History ofWestern Thought: from Ancient Greece to the Twentieth Century (co-trans with YU Zhenhua and LIU Jin, Shanghai, 2004, 2012), and PhilosophyBeyondBorders: An Anthology of Norwegian Philosophy (co-trans with YU Zhenhua et. al., Hangzhou, 1999), Hilary Putnam’s Reason, Truth and History (co-trans with LI Guangcheng, Shanghai, 1997), J. M. Bochenski’s The Methods of Contemporary Thought (co-trans with SHAO Chunlin and LI Fu’an, Shanghai, 1987).

Tong gave academic lectures and read conference papers in many other countries including Australia, Brazil, Germany, Canada, Croatia, Czech, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Norway, South Korea and the United States. He worked at Columbia University of the USA as a research visiting Fulbright Scholar in the academic year 2000-2001 and visited University of Marburg of Germany as a guest professor for half a year (1998).
