Research Fields

His areas of interest include applied research in environmental engineering and pollution control. His work is multi-disciplinary, ranging from studies on solid waste and wastewater treatment, design on pollution control, and environmental microbiology. 

Dr. Xie has more than 130 papers in print (including 40+ in international Journals) and various awards by Shanghai government. He has been successful in securing 50+ projects including from NSFCs, municipal funding and industrial research grants. He currently owns 10+ patents.The research program focuses on the use of ecological and engineered biological systems for environmental pollution control, bioremediation, and the treatment of wastewater from industrial. Current and recent projects include Control strategies of emerging contaminants like Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during landfilling (NSFC project), and the ecological risk of ARGs in urban landscape water; Use of constructed wetlands and biological filters for river water quality management (National 863 project);Application of a novel engineered biological reactor with denitrification and anammox for nitrogen contained wastewater treatment, using innovative molecular and isotopic techniques for studying microbial ecology of complex communities to better understand and optimize the bioremediation and nutrient removal (two NSFC projects, project of Shanghai Sci & Technol. commission); Characterization and improvement of biological treatment performance through microbial enhance process applications like functional microorganisms; Assessment of a novel high efficient and low cost wastewater treatment system for rural areas (China-UK fund).
